With the fuel tank and line installed and it was time to try starting it. With a few failed attempts we inspected the wiring and found the coil wire chewed through by a rodent on both the coil and solenoid sides. With that connected it fired up and died, low idle and starting was not going to happen.
Over the next few days I replaced the plugs, wires, plugged the vacuum tube from the original fuel pump, removed the idle set screw and cleaned it off, sprayed some carb cleaner on the outside and a little in the air horn. Then tried it again with some big success, the idle adjust needed a little help but new it idles and starts well.
I ordered cap, rotor, points and condenser and will install those this week.
Coil and ballast resistor also need to be replaced.
I tried driving it and within a few blocks it died, and wouldn't restart. It is still not getting fuel so I'll try clearing the lines in the tank with a bike brake cable and seafoam. And I'll order a new carb from IH parts. It will be about the same as finding someone to rebuild this one, something I don't want to do.
It turns out there was a split in the left tank line, after the pickup. That's a 1/4 inverted flare thread and I just replaced it with a brake line from Napa auto parts, bent to match the shape of the original. Started and drove it around the block without issues.
After having accelerator issues I asked IH parts america and this was the response about the holley 1904.
"They are very notorious for wearing out on the throttle plate shaft and causing a lean condition."
A choice of rebuilding or buying an after market replacement, I ordered the new one. Here it is installed.
